Pathways to Medicine

Our Academic Focus: Preparing Students for Medicine Pathways

At Premed Senior College, our academic program is intentionally designed to prepare students for competitive pathways into medicine, dentistry, and a range of health science degrees. From Stage 1 through to Stage 2 SACE, we support students to make informed subject selections and build the strong scientific foundation required for success in highly competitive tertiary study.

We explicitly prepare students for all key components of university entry, including SACE completion requirements, ATAR achievement, and the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), with structured guidance on what the UCAT involves and how to prepare effectively for it. In addition, students are supported to develop the communication and critical thinking skills required for medical and health professional interviews.

Our program also provides clear insight into entry pathways for local universities, including the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, ensuring students understand prerequisites, selection criteria, and competitive expectations from the outset.

Medicine and allied health degrees remain among the most competitive university programs in Australia and internationally. Success depends on more than ATAR alone, it requires early and strategic subject choices, alignment with prerequisite requirements, and the development of advanced scientific reasoning and academic discipline. At Premed, we guide students through every stage of this journey so they are not only eligible, but genuinely prepared to compete for these pathways.

Why Subject Choice Matters in Stage 1 and Stage 2

Stage 1 and Stage 2 subjects play a critical role in determining which university courses students are eligible to apply for. Many health and science degrees have specific subject prerequisites, and some pathways may be limited or closed entirely if these subjects are not studied at senior level.

At Premed, we strongly encourage students aiming for medicine or health sciences to study:

  • Biology – builds understanding of human systems, disease, and life processes

  • Chemistry – a core prerequisite for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Science

  • Physics – strengthens problem-solving and supports medical imaging, engineering, and medical physics

  • Specialist Mathematics – enhances competitiveness for science, engineering, and medical science degrees

Keeping Pathways Open

By selecting the right combination of Stage 1 and Stage 2 subjects, students can keep multiple pathways open, including:

  • Direct entry into Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Science

  • Entry into Medical Science or Biomedical Science as a pathway to postgraduate Medicine or Dentistry

  • Access to Allied Health, Research, Engineering, and Health Science degrees
