Pathways to Medicine

Our Academic Focus: Preparing Students for Medicine & Health Pathways

At PreMed, our academic program is intentionally designed to prepare students for medicine, dentistry, and health-related university pathways. From subject selection in Stage 1 through to Stage 2, we guide students to build the strong scientific foundation required for competitive tertiary courses in Australia and overseas.

Medicine and allied health degrees are among the most competitive university programs. Success depends not only on ATAR, but also on choosing the right senior subjects early, meeting prerequisite requirements, and developing advanced scientific thinking skills.

Why Subject Choice Matters in Stage 1 and Stage 2

Stage 1 and Stage 2 subjects play a critical role in determining which university courses students are eligible to apply for. Many health and science degrees have specific subject prerequisites, and some pathways may be limited or closed entirely if these subjects are not studied at senior level.

At PreMed, we strongly encourage students aiming for medicine or health sciences to study:

  • Biology – builds understanding of human systems, disease, and life processes

  • Chemistry – a core prerequisite for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Science

  • Physics – strengthens problem-solving and supports medical imaging, engineering, and medical physics

  • Specialist Mathematics – enhances competitiveness for science, engineering, and medical science degrees

Keeping Pathways Open

By selecting the right combination of Stage 1 and Stage 2 subjects, students can keep multiple pathways open, including:

  • Direct entry into Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Science

  • Entry into Medical Science or Biomedical Science as a pathway to postgraduate Medicine or Dentistry

  • Access to Allied Health, Research, Engineering, and Health Science degrees
